Śaraṇāgata-Atithi-Dharma in the Kapota Narrative (कपोत-आख्यानम्—शरणागतधर्मः)
श्षपच उवाच आत्मैव साक्षी कुलधर्मकृत्ये त्वमेव जानासि यदत्र दुष्कृतम् । यो ह्ाद्रियाद् भक्ष्यमिति श्वमांसं मन्ये न तस्यास्ति विवर्जनीयम्,चाण्डालने कहा--किस कुलके लिये कौन-सा कार्य धर्म है, इस विषयमें यह आत्मा ही साक्षी है। इस अभक्ष्य-भक्षणमें जो पाप है, उसे आप भी जानते हैं। मेरी समझमें जो कुत्तेके मांसको भक्षणीय बताकर उसका आदर करे, उसके लिये इस संसारमें कुछ भी त्याज्य नहीं है
śvapaca uvāca: ātmaiva sākṣī kuladharmakṛtye tvam eva jānāsi yad atra duṣkṛtam | yo hy ādriyād bhakṣyam iti śvamāṁsaṁ manye na tasyāsti vivarjanīyam ||
The outcaste said: “In matters of what constitutes one’s family-duty and rightful conduct, the Self alone is the witness. You too know what wrongdoing lies in this act of eating what should not be eaten. In my view, whoever honors dog’s flesh as ‘fit to be eaten’ has nothing left in this world that he would refrain from.”
