Śaraṇāgata-Atithi-Dharma in the Kapota Narrative (कपोत-आख्यानम्—शरणागतधर्मः)
विश्वामित्र उवाच स्थाने भवेत् संशय: प्रेत्यभावे नि:संशय: कर्मणां वै विनाश: । अहं पुनर्व॒तनित्य: शमात्मा मूलं रक्ष्यं भक्षयिष्याम्यभक्ष्यम्,विश्वामित्र बोले--यदि उपवास करके प्राण दे दिया जाय तो मरनेके बाद क्या होगा? यह संशययुक्त बात है; परंतु ऐसा करनेसे पुण्यकर्मोका विनाश होगा, इसमें संशय नहीं है, (क्योंकि शरीर ही धर्माचरणका मूल है) अतः मैं जीवनरक्षाके पश्चात् फिर प्रतिदिन व्रत एवं शम, दम आदिमें तत्पर रहकर पापकर्मोंका प्रायश्चित्त कर लूँगा। इस समय तो धर्मके मूलभूत शरीरकी ही रक्षा करना आवश्यक है; अतः मैं इस अभक्ष्य पदार्थका भक्षण करूँगा
Viśvāmitra uvāca—sthāne bhavet saṁśayaḥ pretyabhāve niḥsaṁśayaḥ karmaṇāṁ vai vināśaḥ | ahaṁ punar vrata-nityaḥ śamātmā mūlaṁ rakṣyaṁ bhakṣayiṣyāmy abhakṣyam |
Viśvāmitra said: “It is understandable to doubt what becomes of one after death; but there is no doubt that by dying through fasting one brings about the ruin of one’s meritorious works. Since the body is the very root that supports the practice of dharma, I will first protect that root. Afterwards, living with daily vows and a mind devoted to restraint and tranquility, I will atone for any fault. Therefore, for the sake of preserving the foundation of dharma, I will eat what is ordinarily not to be eaten.”
