आपद्धर्मनिर्णयः — विश्वामित्र-श्वपचसंवादः

कृतं मृगयसे शत्रुं सुखोपायमसंशयम्‌ । “बुद्धिमानू लोमश! जो तुम आज जालके बन्धनसे छूटनेके बाद ही कृतज्ञतावश मुझ अपने शत्रुको सुख पहुँचानेका असंदिग्ध उपाय ढूँढ़ने लगे हो, इसका क्या कारण है? जहाँतक उपकारका बदला चुकानेका प्रश्न है, वहाँतक तो हमारी-तुम्हारी समान स्थिति है। यदि मैंने तुम्हें संकटसे छुड़ाया है, तो तुमने भी तो मुझे वैसी ही विपत्तिसे बचाया है; फिर मैं तो कुछ करता नहीं, तुम्हीं क्यों उपकारका बदला देनेके लिये उतावले हो उठे हो? ।। १४७ * अस्मिन्‌ निलय एव त्वं न्यग्रोधादवतारित:

kṛtaṃ mṛgayase śatruṃ sukhopāyam asaṃśayam | asmin nilaya eva tvaṃ nyagrodhād avatāritaḥ ||

Bhishma said: “You are seeking, without doubt, a sure and gentle means to benefit your enemy in return for a deed done. Yet it was in this very dwelling that you were brought down from the banyan tree. Why, after being freed from the snare, are you so eager—out of gratitude—to find a way to bring comfort to me, your enemy? As for repaying a kindness, our positions are equal: if I released you from danger, you too saved me from a similar peril. Then why do you alone hurry to repay the favor, while I do nothing?”
