Daṇḍa-svarūpa-nirūpaṇa

The Nature, Forms, and Function of Daṇḍa

विद्या तपो वा विपुलं धनं वा सर्व होतद्‌ व्यवसायेन शक्‍्यम्‌ | बुद्धयायत्तं तन्निवसेद्‌ देहवत्सु तस्माद्‌ विद्याद्‌ व्यवसायं प्रभूतम्‌,विद्या, तप तथा प्रचुर धन--ये सब उद्योगसे प्राप्त हो सकते हैं। वह उद्योग प्राणियोंमें बुद्धिके अधीन होकर रहता है; अतः उद्योगको ही समस्त कार्योंकी सिद्धिका पर्याप्त साधन समझे

vidyā tapo vā vipulaṃ dhanaṃ vā sarvaṃ hy etad vyavasāyena śakyam | buddhyāyattaṃ tan nivased dehavatṣu tasmād vidyād vyavasāyaṃ prabhūtam ||

Bhīṣma said: Learning, austerity, or even abundant wealth—indeed all this can be attained through determined effort. That effort abides in embodied beings as something governed by the intellect; therefore one should understand resolute endeavor to be a powerful and sufficient means for the accomplishment of all aims.
