दिष्ट्या नाहं परावृत्तो वैरात् प्राकृतवज्जित:
diṣṭyā nāhaṃ parāvṛtto vairāt prākṛtavajjitaḥ
Sañjaya said: “By good fortune, I have not turned back out of enmity, nor have I behaved in a base, ordinary manner.”

Even amid hostility, one should not be driven by vaira (enmity) into rash retreat or ignoble behavior; ethical steadiness and self-mastery are praised as a form of victory.
Sañjaya reports a moment of reflection in the war narrative, emphasizing that he (as speaker) has not acted from spite or fallen into crude conduct, framing the ongoing conflict in terms of personal restraint and propriety.
