tato 'sitaḥ susaṃrabdho vyavasāyī dṛḍhavrataḥ | apaśyad vai divaṃ yāntaṃ jaigīṣavyaṃ sa devalaḥ ||
Having gone higher, he saw many siddhas moving through the mid-air with minds fixed in single-pointed concentration; and he also beheld the sage Jaigīṣavya being worshipped by those siddhas. Then Asita Devala—steadfast in effort and firm in his vows—was seized by fierce anger, and he saw Jaigīṣavya ascending to heaven.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even rigorous vows and determination can be undermined by anger and envy; genuine ascetic excellence requires inner humility and freedom from ego when witnessing another’s honor or spiritual rise.
Vaiśaṃpāyana narrates that the sage Asita Devala, stirred into anger, sees the sage Jaigīṣavya proceeding to heaven—implying Jaigīṣavya’s recognized spiritual merit and the emotional reaction it triggers in Devala.
