Trita in the Well (Udapāna-kathā) — Balarāma’s Tīrtha Observances
māvamaṃsthāḥ striyaḥ putra mā ca viprān kadācana | gaccha yuktaḥ sadā bhūtvā kuru vai śāsanaṃ mama ||
“My son, never treat women with contempt, and never at any time slight the brāhmaṇas. Go now; remain ever disciplined and vigilant, and carry out my command.”
The verse teaches dharmic restraint and reverence: one should never demean women or brāhmaṇas, and should live with constant self-discipline while faithfully executing rightful instructions.
In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, an elder’s directive is conveyed to a younger person addressed as “son,” emphasizing ethical conduct—especially respect toward women and brāhmaṇas—and urging vigilant obedience to the given command.
