The Vow and Terms of the Mace Duel

dharmato yācamānānāṁ praśamārthaṁ kulasya naḥ | adya tvaṁ svayam eva pṛthivyāḥ svāmī na bhavasi; tarhi tasyā dānaṁ kathaṁ kartum icchasi? rājan! yadā vayaṁ kulasya śāntiṁ dhārayituṁ pūrvaṁ dharmataḥ svam eva rājyaṁ yācāmāhe, tadā tvaṁ kuto naitad pṛthivīṁ asmabhyaṁ prāyacchaḥ ||

Yudhiṣṭhira said: “When we were asking, in accordance with dharma, for our own rightful share—seeking only to restore peace within our lineage—why did you not grant us this land then? Today you are no longer even the sovereign of the earth; how, then, do you wish to make a ‘gift’ of it? O king, when we first petitioned for our own kingdom to preserve the family’s harmony, why did you refuse us the earth at that time?”
