Unrestrained Battle Description and Śakuni’s Rear Assault
na cacāla mahārāja sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ |
Sañjaya said: O King, in full view of the entire army, he did not so much as waver. Though the great-souled heroes were showering Duryodhana from every side with volleys of arrows, he remained unmoved—steadfast in the face of danger, embodying the grim resolve that sustains warriors amid the moral darkness of war.
The verse highlights steadfastness under pressure: a warrior’s composure in public crisis becomes a measure of resolve. Ethically, it also points to the tragic power of determination in war—steadiness can serve both righteous duty and destructive ambition.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, before the eyes of the whole army, Duryodhana does not waver even as opponents rain arrows on him from all sides.
