Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel on Restraint and the Pāṇḍavas’ Authorized Return (धृतराष्ट्र-उपदेशः)

Yudhiṣṭhira said: “O King, I stake Bhīmasena in this game—Bhīma, the prince who is without equal in strength, foremost among mace-bearers, and a crusher of enemies. Yet he is not fit to be wagered.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights an ethical rupture: even while recognizing Bhīma’s dignity and the impropriety (anarhatā) of treating a person as a stake, Yudhiṣṭhira proceeds—showing how addiction, social pressure, and misplaced notions of honor can override dharma.

During the dice match in the royal assembly, Yudhiṣṭhira continues wagering progressively graver stakes. Here he declares that he is staking his brother Bhīmasena—praising his unmatched strength and martial eminence—yet admitting that Bhīma is not something that ought to be put at stake.
