Duryodhana’s Description of Tribute at the Rājasūya

Duryodhana said: “I am filled to the brim with resentment; burning day and night with envy, I wither away—just as a little water quickly dries up when the season of clear, bright heat arrives.”
Unchecked envy (īrṣyā/amarṣa) becomes self-consuming: it does not harm the rival as much as it dries up the one who harbors it, undermining judgment, peace, and dharmic conduct.
Duryodhana confesses his inner torment: seeing the Pandavas’ rise and honor, he is overwhelmed by resentment and feels himself burning constantly, expressed through the simile of a small amount of water evaporating in the hot season.
