Adhyāya 39: Śiśupāla’s Censure and Bhīma’s Contained Wrath

tatrāhūtā gatāḥ sarve sunīthapramukhā gaṇāḥ | samadṛśyanta saṅkruddhā vivarṇavadanās tathā || sa eva hi mayā vadhyo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana said: Then, when they had been summoned, all those groups—led by Sunītha—came forward. They appeared inflamed with anger, their faces drained of color. (Shishupāla’s challenge stood firm:) “Indeed, whoever answers me will be slain by me—of this there is no doubt.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how unchecked anger and wounded ego can rapidly turn a public religious assembly into a battlefield. Ethically, it warns that intolerance toward another’s devotion (here, honor shown to Kṛṣṇa) and the urge to ‘answer’ insult with violence undermine dharma and the sanctity of communal rites.

After Shishupāla provokes the kings and issues a lethal challenge, his supporters—led by Sunītha—arrive in response to his summons. They are visibly furious and ready for confrontation, signaling an organized attempt to create disturbance in Yudhiṣṭhira’s sacrificial ceremony.
