Vaiśampāyana said: Then, in that assembly, certain learned men—armed with reasons and conclusions drawn from the śāstras—would make weak positions appear strong, and would also render strong positions weak, by their many modes of argument. The scene shows how intellectual skill, when used merely to win, can distort judgment and unsettle what is truly right.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse cautions that mastery of logic and śāstra can be used to manipulate perception—making the weak seem strong and the strong seem weak—so ethical discernment (dharma-buddhi) must guide debate, not mere victory.
Vaiśampāyana describes the atmosphere of the royal assembly: learned disputants employ varied arguments and śāstric conclusions to overturn positions, showcasing the power—and potential misuse—of intellectual skill in courtly settings.
