Adhyāya 31: Rājasūya-samāgama — The Gathering of Kings and the Ordering of Hospitality
चक्रे तेन स संग्रामं सहदेवेन भारत । स तमाजोौ विनिर्जित्य दक्षिणाभिमुखो ययौ,भारत! उस जम्भकपुत्रने सहदेवके साथ घोर संग्राम किया; परंतु सहदेव उसे युद्धमें जीतकर दक्षिण दिशाकी ओर बढ़ गये
cakre tena sa saṅgrāmaṃ sahadevena bhārata | sa tam ājau vinirjitya dakṣiṇābhimukho yayau ||
Vaiśampāyana said: O Bhārata, he fought a fierce battle with Sahadeva. Having decisively defeated him in that combat, Sahadeva then advanced facing south—pressing onward in his campaign after establishing victory.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the kṣatriya ethic of resolute action: victory in righteous combat is followed by disciplined continuation of one’s assigned campaign, without indulgence or delay.
A warrior engages Sahadeva in a severe fight; Sahadeva defeats him in the battlefield and then proceeds southward, indicating the onward movement of his military expedition.
