Adhyāya 31: Rājasūya-samāgama — The Gathering of Kings and the Ordering of Hospitality
एवं स्तुतो5सि भगवन् प्रीतेन शुचिना मया । तुषिं पुष्टि श्रुतिं चैव प्रीतिं चाग्ने प्रयच्छ मे
evaṁ stuto 'si bhagavan prītena śucinā mayā | tuṣṭiṁ puṣṭiṁ śrutiṁ caiva prītiṁ cāgne prayaccha me ||
“O Blessed Lord, I have praised you in this manner with a pure heart and loving devotion. O Agni, grant me contentment and well-being, and also sacred learning and the power of right hearing and understanding, along with enduring affection.”
सहदेव उवाच
The verse teaches that inner contentment, prosperity, and true learning are best sought through purity and reverent devotion; knowledge (śruti) is approached as a sacred gift received through attentive listening and disciplined humility.
Sahadeva addresses Agni directly, concluding a hymn of praise and requesting specific boons—contentment, nourishment/prosperity, sacred learning, and affectionate favor—indicating a ritual or devotional moment within the Sabha Parva context.
