Arjuna’s Northern Conquests and Tribute Collection
जरासंधदह्दे घोरे दुःखपड्के निमज्जताम् | राज्ञां समभ्युद्धरणं यदिदं कृतमद्य वै
jarāsandha-hrade ghore duḥkha-paṅke nimajjatām | rājñāṁ samabhyuddharaṇaṁ yad idaṁ kṛtam adya vai ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “We kings were sinking in the dreadful lake of Jarāsandha, mired in the mud of suffering. The rescue you have accomplished for us today is truly fitting for you.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A righteous leader’s duty is to protect and uplift those oppressed by tyranny; rescuing others from suffering is presented as an act befitting true nobility and dharma.
The speaker describes many kings as trapped under Jarāsandha’s oppressive power, likening their plight to drowning in a dreadful lake of misery, and praises the addressee for having rescued them that very day.
