Vaiśampāyana said: Then Jarāsandha, the king of men, steadfast in truth, addressed them. O Kauravya, censuring those three whose conduct was at odds with the guise they had assumed, he said: “Brahmins who keep the snātaka discipline do not, without a special occasion such as the completion-rite, go about wearing garlands and sandal-paste. This is well known throughout the world, and I know it too. Who, then, are you—garlanded as you are, and bearing on your arms the clear marks of bowstring friction?”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
External signs (dress, garlands, ritual marks) should align with one’s dharma and conduct; a discerning ruler tests appearances against known ethical and social norms, and inconsistency invites scrutiny.
Jarāsandha confronts three visitors who present themselves as Brahmins but display telltale warrior signs (garlands and bowstring abrasions). He reproaches the mismatch between their assumed guise and their behavior, demanding their true identity.
