Commencement of the Regulated Duel
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगा: । दृष्टवा तु दुर्निमित्तानि जरासंधमदर्शयन्,इसी समय वेदोंके पारगामी दिद्वान् ब्राह्मणोंने अनेक अपशकुन देखकर राजा जरासंधको उनके विषयमें सूचित किया
etasminn eva kāle tu brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ | dṛṣṭvā tu durnimittāni jarāsandham adarśayan ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Just at that time, Brahmins who had mastered the Vedas, having observed ominous portents, went and informed King Jarāsandha about those ill signs.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Responsible governance includes heeding qualified counsel. The verse highlights the dharmic role of learned Brahmins as advisers who alert a ruler to warning signs, urging prudence rather than reckless action.
At that moment in the story, Veda-versed Brahmins notice inauspicious omens and report them to King Jarāsandha, signaling that events ahead may be dangerous or unfavorable.
