Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the moral authority of tapas (austerity) and the role of revered sages in guiding political life: a king’s story is framed through the arrival of a holy ascetic whose movements and words can shape royal decisions and future events.

Kṛṣṇa begins recounting a past episode: after some time, the sage Chaṇḍakauśika returns to the region of Magadha, setting the stage for subsequent narration connected with Magadha’s ruler(s) and future developments.
