Sañjaya said: “While that great battle was in progress, and as the combat between you and Karṇa was underway, Dharma’s son (Yudhiṣṭhira) came there first, wishing to witness the fight.”

The verse highlights the ethical dimension of war: decisive combats are not merely displays of strength but events observed and evaluated through the lens of dharma. Yudhiṣṭhira’s presence as a witness suggests accountability—actions in battle carry moral weight and are subject to judgment by those committed to righteousness.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, during the ongoing great war and the fight involving Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s side and Karṇa, Yudhiṣṭhira arrived first to watch the combat. It sets the scene for a significant confrontation and indicates who is present at its outset.
