Arjuna Breaks the Encirclement; Bhīma Reinforces
eṣa karṇo raṇe jitvā pañcālān pāṇḍusṛñjayān | diśo viprekṣate sarvāstvadartham iti me matiḥ ||
Sañjaya said: “Here is Karṇa—having conquered the Pāñcālas and the Pāṇḍu–Sṛñjayas in battle—now scanning all directions with his gaze, intent on you. Such is my judgment.”
The verse highlights battlefield discernment and the ethical weight of leadership: victory over many does not end conflict, but intensifies responsibility and danger. Sañjaya’s ‘matiḥ’ (judgment) models careful assessment—recognizing an opponent’s intent and the escalating consequences of war-driven ambition.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Karṇa, after defeating the Pāñcālas and the Pāṇḍava-aligned Sṛñjayas, is now surveying all directions, seemingly searching for or turning his attention toward the king’s son (Duryodhana) as his next objective.
