Karṇa-parva Adhyāya 58 — Arjuna’s Arrow-Storm and Relief of Bhīmasena

Sañjaya said: Smiling as those warriors advanced into the battle, eager for victory, Karṇa alone held them back on the field—just as a mountain checks the rushing torrents of water.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ideal of kṣatriya valor and steadfastness in battle: a single determined warrior, confident and resolute, can restrain the advance of many—illustrated through the ethical lens of martial duty amid the overwhelming force of war.

As warriors advance on the battlefield seeking victory, Karṇa, alone and smiling with confidence, checks their forward movement, compared to a mountain halting rushing torrents.
