Yudhiṣṭhira’s Reproach to Dhanaṃjaya
tato yudhiṣṭhiraḥ karṇam adūrasthaṃ nivāritam | abravīt paravīraghnaṃ krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ||
Then Yudhiṣṭhira, his eyes reddened with anger, addressed Karṇa—slayer of enemy heroes—who had been checked and held back though standing close by. In that moment the battle’s moral strain stood revealed: righteous restraint and kingly duty wrestled with wrath and the urgent demands of war.

Even in a just cause, anger can cloud judgment; the verse highlights the ethical need for restraint and clarity in speech and action during war, especially for a king responsible for dharma.
Sañjaya reports that Yudhiṣṭhira, enraged, turns to address Karṇa, who is nearby but has been held back; the verse sets up Yudhiṣṭhira’s forthcoming words in the heat of battle.
