Chapter 1
तथा तु संचिन्तयतां तान् क्लेशान् द्यूतकारितान् | दुःखेन क्षणदा राजन् जगामाब्दशतोपमा
tathā tu sañcintayatāṃ tān kleśān dyūtakāritān | duḥkhena kṣaṇadā rājan jagāmābdaśatopamā ||
As they kept reflecting on those afflictions brought about by the game of dice, that night, O King, passed in sorrow—seeming like a hundred years.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Unrighteous actions such as deceitful gambling generate lasting suffering: even after the event ends, the mind’s repeated recollection prolongs pain, making time itself feel heavy and extended.
Vaiśampāyana describes how, as the afflicted ones kept thinking about the hardships caused by the dice-game, the night passed with great distress, feeling as long as a hundred years.
