Sañjaya said: “If today, in the thick of battle, you deem it fitting that I should fight with him, then I submit myself to you as one under command—like a servant. Protect my honor and reputation today.” Saying this, Duryodhana hurried in a single chariot to meet Droṇa and addressed him thus.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how, amid crisis, a leader may seek legitimacy and protection through submission to authority. It raises an ethical question: is the aim to uphold dharma and collective responsibility, or merely to preserve personal reputation (yaśas) by leaning on a superior’s power?

As the Kaurava forces are thrown into disarray, Duryodhana rushes alone in his chariot to Droṇa and asks him to protect his honor, declaring himself fully under Droṇa’s command and ready to fight as Droṇa deems proper.
