Nārada said: When the foremost Brāhmaṇas cried out, “O Rāma of the Bhṛgu line!”, their lament was a desperate appeal for protection. Yet Paraśurāma, inflamed by wrath, had already cut down countless Kṣatriyas with his axe. The anguished words spoken by the hermitage-dwellers and the compassionate wailing—“Bhārgava Paraśurāma, run, save us!”—became an unbearable cry that pierced him, revealing the moral tension between violent retribution and the duty to protect the innocent.

The verse highlights the ethical strain between vengeance-driven violence and the dharmic obligation to respond to the suffering of innocents. The Brāhmaṇas’ compassionate cry functions as a moral check: even a powerful warrior-sage must remain answerable to the pain his actions cause and to the duty of protection.
Nārada describes a moment when leading Brāhmaṇas, distressed by events around the hermitage, cry out to Paraśurāma—addressing him as ‘Rāma of the Bhṛgu line’—imploring him to hurry and save them. The surrounding context recalls Paraśurāma’s fierce campaign against Kṣatriyas with his axe, and the lament becomes a piercing appeal that he cannot ignore.
