Droṇasya raudra-prayogaḥ
Droṇa’s intensified assault and the Pāṇḍava response
कुरुपाण्डवसैन्यानां शब्देनापूरयज्जगत् । तदनन्तर एक-दूसरेके वधकी इच्छावाले कौरवों तथा पाण्डवोंकी सेनाओंमें भयंकर युद्ध होने लगा और उनके कोलाहलसे सारा जगत् व्याप्त हो गया
kuru-pāṇḍava-sainyānāṃ śabdenāpūrayaj jagat | tadanantaraṃ paraspara-vadha-icchāvāle kauravāṇāṃ tathā pāṇḍavānāṃ senāsu bhayaṅkaraṃ yuddhaṃ babhūva, teṣāṃ kolāhalena ca sarvaṃ jagad vyāptam abhavat |
Sañjaya said: “The roar of the Kuru and Pāṇḍava armies filled the world. Thereafter, with each side intent on the other’s destruction, a dreadful battle erupted between the Kaurava and Pāṇḍava forces, and their tumult seemed to pervade the whole earth.”
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores how collective hatred and the intent to kill rapidly escalate into all-consuming violence: when mutual destruction becomes the aim, the ‘noise’ of conflict spreads everywhere, symbolizing the ethical collapse that accompanies war.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Kaurava and Pāṇḍava armies raise a tremendous din, and immediately a fierce battle breaks out as both sides rush to slay one another.
