Nārada said: “Even after performing the Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices, and even after offering the Viśvajit rite as well—indeed, even after completing thousands of Vājapeya sacrifices, each carried out with full and proper ritual completeness—one should understand that mere abundance of sacrifice is not, by itself, the final measure of righteousness (dharma).”
नारद उवाच
The verse underscores that even vast quantities of correctly performed Vedic sacrifices are not automatically the highest criterion of dharma; ethical and spiritual evaluation cannot rest on ritual magnitude alone.
Nārada is speaking and cites a series of eminent yajñas—Agniṣṭoma, Atirātra, Viśvajit, and thousands of Vājapeyas—setting up a moral comparison or instruction about what truly constitutes righteousness beyond ritual accomplishment.
