Bhagadatta’s Advance, the Saṃśaptaka Challenge, and Arjuna’s Counterstrike

kulālacakravan nāgas tadā tūrṇam atha bhramat | nāgāyutabalaḥ śrīmān kālayāno vṛkodaram ||

Sañjaya said: Then that elephant began to whirl about swiftly, like a potter’s wheel. Endowed with the strength of ten thousand elephants and splendid in appearance, the lordly beast Kālayāna strove to strike down Vṛkodara (Bhīma). The scene shows how, in war’s fury, sheer force and momentum become instruments of lethal intent even against the foremost heroes.
