divyaṃ ca brahmacaryeṇa liṅgam asya yathā sthitam | mahayaty eṣa lokāṃś ca maheśvara iti smṛtaḥ ||
Vyāsa said: His liṅga is divine and stands established through perfect brahmacarya (chaste, disciplined spiritual restraint). He magnifies and upholds all the worlds; therefore he is remembered as Maheśvara, the Great Lord.
The verse links inner discipline (brahmacarya) with spiritual authority: Śiva’s greatness is grounded in self-mastery, and that restraint becomes the source of his power to uplift and sustain the worlds—hence the epithet Maheśvara.
Vyāsa is describing and praising Śiva, emphasizing the divinity and established nature of his liṅga and explaining why he is called Maheśvara—because his presence and power glorify and uphold all realms.
