Shaking the whole earth and striking terror into your army, the Pāṇḍava raised a mighty blast on his conch and a resounding clamor of his arms. Hearing that conch-roar and the thunder of his arm-strikes, your warriors surrounded him on all sides and showered him with volleys of arrows. But the son of Kuntī—swift in movement and quick in valor—reached his foe in the space of a blink and, with a rapid spread of shafts like a net, covered him over.

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights a kṣatriya mode of dharma in war: courage, speed, and resolve are paired with strategic intimidation (conch-blast and arm-clamor) and decisive action. It also shows how morale and perception on the battlefield can be as consequential as weapons.

Bhīma advances, shaking the ground and frightening the Kaurava host with a loud conch and arm-clapping challenge. The Kauravas encircle him and rain arrows. Bhīma, moving with great speed, reaches his opponent almost instantly and overwhelms him with a dense spread of arrows like a net.
