Sañjaya said: “O King, Karṇa—the son of Adhiratha—having understood that Bhīṣma has been struck down and that the Kuru host has fallen into peril like a shattered boat in an unfathomable sea, set out to rescue your son’s army from calamity, acting with the concern of a true brother.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a warrior’s ethical self-conception in crisis: when the collective is destabilized (Bhishma’s fall), Karna frames his action as rescue and responsibility toward his side, emphasizing loyalty and protective duty even amid adharma-saturated war.

After Bhishma is brought down, the Kaurava forces are compared to a broken boat in a deep sea. Sanjaya reports that Karna, realizing the army’s peril, sets out to support and ‘save’ Duryodhana’s host, motivated by brother-like solidarity.
