अति पाण्डवमाचार्यो द्रोणं चाप्पति पाण्डव: । नानयोरन्तरं शक््यं द्रष्टमन्येन केनचित्
ati pāṇḍavam ācāryo droṇaṃ cāppati pāṇḍavaḥ | nānayor antaraṃ śakyaṃ draṣṭum anyena kenacit ||
Sañjaya said: The Teacher (Droṇa) was wholly aligned with the Pāṇḍavas, and the Pāṇḍava warrior pressed hard upon Droṇa. No one else could discern any gap or separation between those two—so closely matched and so directly engaged were they in that combat.

The verse highlights how, in the crucible of dharma-yuddha, excellence and resolve can make two opponents appear inseparable—so evenly matched that observers cannot detect an opening. Ethically, it underscores the seriousness of duty and skill in battle, where commitment and capability determine the immediacy of engagement.
Sañjaya describes an intense duel: Droṇa is fully engaged, and a Pāṇḍava warrior attacks him at close quarters. Their fight is so tight and continuous that no onlooker can perceive any interval or advantage between them.
