The verse functions as an omen: when violence and adharma dominate, the world is perceived as hostile from every direction. It warns that unchecked aggression breeds more fear and predation, eroding moral order and safety.
Sañjaya describes terrifying creatures converging from all sides—lions, tigers, hyenas, flame-tongued serpents, and iron-beaked birds—attacking as part of the dreadful portents surrounding the Kurukṣetra war.
