Pāñcāleṣu prabhagneṣu kṣīyamāṇeṣu sarvataḥ | Janārdano dīna-manāḥ pratyabhāṣata Phālgunam ||
Sañjaya said: When the Pāñcāla warriors were being shattered and were dwindling on every side, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), his mind weighed down with compassion and concern, addressed Phālguna (Arjuna).

Even amid warfare, a leader must remain sensitive to the suffering and collapse of allies; compassion and clear counsel are not opposed to duty (dharma) but guide its right execution under pressure.
The Pāñcāla forces are being broken and reduced on all sides. Seeing this crisis, Kṛṣṇa (Janārdana), emotionally affected, turns to Arjuna (Phālguna) and begins to speak—setting up counsel or a decisive response to the battlefield reversal.
