Sañjaya said: “May those same sinful realms befall us—realms destined for people who steal what has been entrusted, who destroy sacred learning, who fight against an impotent opponent, and who keep company with the base—if we return without killing Arjuna, or if, tormented by his arrows, we turn away from battle out of fear.”

Educational Q&A

The verse frames cowardice and failure in one’s vowed duty (here, facing Arjuna in battle) as morally catastrophic, equating it with grave social and religious transgressions such as betraying trust (stealing deposits) and destroying sacred learning.

Sañjaya reports a warrior’s resolve: they declare that if they retreat in fear from Arjuna’s arrows or return without accomplishing the objective of killing him, they deserve the same hellish fate as notorious sinners.
