Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the fragility of collective morale in war: even a large army can collapse into panic when a prominent fighter is wounded and withdrawn, underscoring the ethical cost of violence and the dependence of many on the steadiness of a few.

Sañjaya reports that a charioteer removes a warrior who has been pierced and wounded by arrows from the battlefield; immediately afterward, the great army begins to flee in the darkness of night.
