Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the moral danger of partiality: hatred toward one side and devotion to another distort judgment in war and governance, undermining dharma by replacing fairness with factional attachment.

Sañjaya addresses the listener (implicitly Dhṛtarāṣṭra), pointing to his entrenched animosity toward the Pāṇḍavas and his loyal bias toward the Kauravas, setting up a critique of the attitudes driving decisions during the Kurukṣetra war.
