The Vāsavī Spear’s Use, Post-Ghaṭotkaca Grief, and Vyāsa’s Counsel

Sañjaya said: “Behold! I am born of Bhīmasena, within the mighty and renowned Kuru line. I am the son of the Pāṇḍavas—warriors who never turn their backs on the battlefield. I am a king among the Rākṣasas, and in strength I am like Daśagrīva Rāvaṇa.”

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the warrior ethic of not retreating and the importance of lineage and reputation in shaping martial identity; it also cautions that self-asserted power and pedigree can become instruments of pride within the moral chaos of war.

A combatant is being characterized through a forceful self-declaration: he claims descent from Bhīma within the Kuru line, aligns himself with the Pāṇḍavas’ fearless battlefield conduct, asserts kingship among the Rākṣasas, and compares his strength to Rāvaṇa—heightening the dramatic tension of the Drona Parva war scene.
