Duryodhana’s Appeal to Karna — The Kripa–Karna Dialogue
yudhyamānaṃ tu saṃrambhād bhīmasenaṃ hasann iva | abhyapadyata kaunteyaṃ karṇo rājan vṛkodaram ||
As Bhīmasena fought in a surge of wrathful zeal, Karṇa—seeming to laugh in derision—advanced straight up to that son of Kuntī, Vṛkodara, O King.
The verse highlights how inner states—especially anger (saṃrambha) and contemptuous mockery (hasann iva)—shape the moral texture of battle. Even within kṣatriya warfare, self-mastery and restraint are ethically weighty; derision and rage intensify violence and cloud discernment.
Bhīma is fighting fiercely, driven by wrath. Karṇa, appearing to laugh in scorn, advances to confront him directly. The line sets the tone for a charged encounter where psychological provocation accompanies physical combat.
