Sanjaya said: O King, when Drona—making a calculated distinction in his resolve—vowed to seize King Yudhishthira, your troops, hearing of the attempt to capture Yudhishthira, raised loud lion-roars and began striking their arms in exultation. O descendant of Bharata, at that time Dharmaraja Yudhishthira quickly learned, through his trusted secret agents and in the proper manner, the full details of what the son of Bharadvaja (Drona) intended to do.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how a commander’s vow and strategy (pratijñā, antaraṃ kṛtvā) shapes the ethical and political stakes of war, while also emphasizing the necessity of timely intelligence (gūptacara) for a righteous ruler to respond without panic or impropriety.
Drona vows to capture Yudhishthira; the Kaurava troops celebrate loudly, expecting advantage. Yudhishthira, however, promptly learns Drona’s intended plan through trusted spies, indicating preparedness and the role of intelligence amid battlefield maneuvering.
