निर्दहन्तं रणे योधान् दारयन्तं च सर्वतः । द्रोणाभिमुखमायान्तं के शूरा: पर्यवारयन्,जिसने काशीपुरीमें काशिराजके महारथी पुत्रको, जो स्त्रियोंके प्रति आसक्त था, समरभूमिमें भल्ल नामक बाणद्दवारा रथसे मार गिराया; जो कुन्तीकुमारोंकी गुप्त मन्त्रणाको सुरक्षित रखनेवाला तथा दुर्योधनका अनर्थ करनेके लिये उद्यत रहनेवाला है तथा जिसकी उत्पत्ति द्रोणाचार्यके वधके लिये हुई है; वह महाधनुर्धर धृष्टद्युम्न जब रणक्षेत्रमें योद्धाओंको अपने बाणोंकी अग्निसे चलाता और सब ओरसे सारी सेनाको विदीर्ण करता हुआ द्रोणाचार्यके सम्मुख आ रहा था, उस समय किन शूरवीरोंने उसे रोका था?
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
nirdahantaṃ raṇe yodhān dārayantaṃ ca sarvataḥ |
droṇābhimukham āyāntaṃ ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “As Dhṛṣṭadyumna advanced straight toward Droṇa—burning the warriors in battle as though with fire and rending the host on every side—what heroes stood around him and checked his onrush?”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the kṣatriya world of duty and consequence: even a seemingly unstoppable warrior must be met by organized resistance. It frames war not as mere rage but as a contest of discipline—advance, counter-advance, and the ethical weight of confronting a revered teacher like Droṇa.
Dhṛṣṭadyumna is depicted as devastating the battlefield and moving directly to engage Droṇa. The narrator then asks which warriors stepped in to surround and restrain him, setting up the next lines that name those defenders and describe the counteraction.
