Droṇa Parva, Chapter 1: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s grief after Bhīṣma’s fall and the army’s reorientation toward Karṇa

bhīṣmeṇa hi mahābāhuḥ sarvakṣatrastha-paśyataḥ, rājan, bala-parākrama-sampannānāṃ rathināṃ gaṇanāyāṃ kriyamāṇāyāṃ samastakṣatriyāṇāṃ paśyatāṃ bhīṣmaḥ mahābāhuṃ naraśreṣṭhaṃ karṇam ardhārathīti nyavedayat; yadyapi sa dvau rathinau samānaḥ.

Sañjaya said: O King, when the warriors—resplendent with strength and valor—were being assessed and ranked, Bhīṣma, in full view of all the kṣatriyas, declared the mighty-armed Karṇa to be only a half-ratha. Yet in truth Karṇa was the equal of two full chariot-warriors.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how status and public reputation in a dharma-bound warrior culture can be shaped by authoritative pronouncements and personal rivalries, not only by actual capability. Ethical discernment requires separating true merit from politically charged evaluations.

During a formal assessment of chariot-warriors, Bhīṣma publicly classifies Karṇa as a lower-ranked fighter (half-ratha) before the assembled kṣatriyas, even though Karṇa’s prowess is described as equal to two full rathis. Sañjaya reports this to Dhṛtarāṣṭra as part of the background tensions among Kaurava leaders.
