Droṇa Parva, Chapter 1: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s grief after Bhīṣma’s fall and the army’s reorientation toward Karṇa
tad udīrṇaṁ mahat sainyaṁ trailokyasyāpi sañjaya | bhayam utpādayet tīvraṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām, sañjaya ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “That vast host, once roused, O Sañjaya, could stir intense fear even in the three worlds—how much more so in the hearts of the high-souled Pāṇḍavas.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how the escalation of war—symbolized by a vast army being ‘roused’—creates fear that can overwhelm even the noble. It implicitly warns that martial power has psychological and ethical consequences, testing courage, restraint, and adherence to dharma.
Vaiśampāyana addresses Sañjaya, describing the immense, aroused army and its capacity to generate intense fear—framing the scale and terror of the conflict as the Drona Parva begins.
