Sañjaya said: “O great king, Virāṭa, commander of the host, was stationed at the rear.”
संजय उवाच
Even in war, conduct is shaped by order and responsibility: commanders are placed where they can preserve cohesion and protect the force, suggesting that leadership involves safeguarding others and maintaining discipline amid violence.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the disposition of warriors in the battle array, stating that Virāṭa, serving as a commander, was stationed at the rear of the formation.
