Adhyāya 78 — Bhīṣma’s Advance, Duryodhana’s Rally, and Concurrent Duels
sātyakir dharmarājaś ca vyūhagrīvāṃ samāsthitāḥ | mahārāja! mahābalī bhīmasenaḥ tasya mukhasthāne sthitaḥ | subhadrākumāraḥ abhimanyuḥ, draupadyāḥ pañca putrāḥ, rākṣasaḥ ghaṭotkacaḥ, sātyakiḥ ca dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ—ete tasya makaravyūhasya grīvābhāge sthitāḥ ||
Sañjaya said: Sātyaki and King Yudhiṣṭhira took their positions at the “neck” of the battle-formation. O King, the mighty Bhīmasena stood where its “mouth” was placed. Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā; the five sons of Draupadī; the rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca; along with Sātyaki and Dharma-rāja Yudhiṣṭhira—these were stationed in the neck-region of that Makara-formation. The passage underscores disciplined coordination in war, where strength is placed at the front and responsible leadership holds the critical connecting point of the array.
