Adhyāya 74 (Book 6, Bhīṣma-parva): Bhīma–Duryodhana re-engagement and afternoon escalation

Sañjaya said: Then all your sons, along with their forces, pressed close to Bhīṣma alone. On that battlefield, Bhīṣma—the son of Śāntanu—became for those distressed warriors a refuge and a place of safety.

Educational Q&A

In crisis, warriors and communities instinctively seek a stabilizing protector; true leadership in dharmic warfare includes giving refuge and restoring courage, not only defeating opponents.

Sañjaya reports that Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons and their troops, shaken and distressed in the fighting, cluster around Bhīṣma; Bhīṣma appears as their chief shelter on the battlefield.
