भीष्मपर्व — अध्याय ७२: सैन्यगुणवर्णनम्, व्यूहरक्षा, दैव-पुरुषकारचिन्ता

तद्‌ युद्धमभवद्‌ घोर देवानां दानवैरिव । जयमाकाडुक्षतां संख्ये यशश्व सुमहाद्भुतम्‌,उस युद्धमें विजय तथा अत्यन्त अद्भुत यशकी अभिलाषा रखनेवाले पाण्डवोंका कौरवोंके साथ उसी प्रकार भयंकर युद्ध हुआ, जैसे देवताओंका दानवोंके साथ हुआ था

Transliteration

tad yuddham abhavad ghoraṁ devānāṁ dānavair iva | jayam ākāṅkṣatāṁ saṅkhye yaśas ca sumahādbhutam ||

Translation

Sanjaya said: Then there arose a dreadful battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas—like the war of the gods against the Danavas. In that clash, the Pandavas, longing for victory and for a wondrous, far-reaching fame, pressed into the fight with fierce resolve.
