अमानुषेण रूपेण चरन्तं पितरं तव । उस समय रणक्षेत्रमें अद्भुत कर्म करते हुए आपके ताऊ भीष्म अमानुषरूपसे विचरते तथा पाण्डव-सेनाका संहार करते थे। वहाँ अनेक प्रकारके मनुष्य उनके सम्बन्धमें नाना प्रकारकी बातें कर रहे थे

amānuṣeṇa rūpeṇa carantaṃ pitaraṃ tava |

Sañjaya said: “Your revered elder—moving about in a form that seemed beyond ordinary human measure—was performing astonishing feats on the battlefield, cutting down the Pāṇḍava forces. Seeing this, many men there spoke in various ways about him, each offering different remarks and interpretations.”
