ततः शक्ति रणे श्वेतो जग्राहोग्रां महाभयाम्,अत्यन्त उग्र, महाभयंकर, कालदण्डके समान घोर और मृत्युकी जिह्वा-सी प्रतीत होनेवाली उस शक्तिको श्वेतने हाथमें उठाया और लंबी साँस लेते हुए रणक्षेत्रमें शान्तनुपुत्र भीष्मसे इस प्रकार कहा--
tataḥ śaktiṃ raṇe śveto jagrāhogrāṃ mahābhayām | atyanta-ugrāṃ mahābhayaṅkarāṃ kāladaṇḍaka-samāṃ ghorāṃ mṛtyu-jihvā-sī pratīyamānāṃ tāṃ śaktiṃ śvetena hastam utthāpya dīrghaṃ niḥśvasya raṇakṣetre śāntanu-putraṃ bhīṣmam iti vacaḥ provāca ||
Sañjaya said: Then Śveta, in the midst of battle, seized a terrible spear (śakti) that inspired great fear—exceedingly fierce and dreadful, like the rod of Death itself, seeming like the very tongue of mortality. Lifting that weapon in his hand and drawing a long breath, he addressed Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, on the battlefield, saying thus—
